Niger
In 2020, Niger’s electricity access rate was estimated at less than 20%—one of the lowest in Sub-Saharan Africa. With 80% of Niger’s population living in rural areas, the rate of electrification goes down to less than 1%.
IFC is working with the government to identify private operators to design, finance, build, operate, and maintain grid-connected solar PV installations on an IPP basis, with the total combined minimum dispatch capacity of at least 50 MWp in the region of Niamey.
This commitment is in line with Niger’s National Electrification Strategy to accelerate on- and off-grid electrification, ensure universal access to electricity for all by 2035, and promote PPPs to help generate 80% of power domestically by 2035.
